The Global Spread of Coffee Cultivation

Coffee is, after crude oil, sometimes cited as one of the most actively traded commodities in the world, and its cultivation now spans dozens of countries across a narrow equatorial band often referred to as the "coffee belt". Yet for centuries after its earliest cultivation, the plant remained tightly controlled by the regions that first grew it commercially, and its expansion around the globe was neither rapid nor accidental.
For a long period, exporters of coffee beans took great care to ensure that only roasted or otherwise treated beans, incapable of germination, left their ports, effectively maintaining a monopoly on cultivation. This changed gradually as travellers and colonial administrators managed to smuggle out living plants or viable seeds, which were then propagated in botanical gardens before being distributed to tropical colonies with suitable climates. From these early transplanted stocks, much of the coffee grown across Latin America, and later parts of Southeast Asia, can trace its lineage.
The plant itself is notably sensitive to its growing conditions. Arabica, the species that accounts for the majority of global production and is generally considered to produce a smoother, more aromatic cup, thrives at higher altitudes with stable, moderate temperatures and struggles in excessive heat or humidity. Robusta, a hardier and higher-yielding species, tolerates lower altitudes and warmer conditions but is typically valued less for its flavour, which is often described as harsher, and is used more frequently in instant coffee and blends where cost efficiency matters more than delicate taste.
As demand grew through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, production increasingly concentrated in a handful of countries with favourable geography and, in many cases, a colonial-era history of large-scale plantation agriculture. Today, small shifts in weather patterns in just a few major producing regions can noticeably affect global supply and prices, a vulnerability that has prompted growing interest in diversifying cultivation to new areas and in breeding varieties more resistant to disease and changing climate conditions.
