When and Why Horses Were Domesticated

Few animals have shaped human history as profoundly as the horse, transforming transport, warfare and agriculture across much of Eurasia for thousands of years. Yet determining exactly when, where and why humans first domesticated horses has proven to be a considerably more difficult puzzle than researchers once assumed. For a long time, a region north of the Black Sea was widely proposed as the origin of horse domestication, based partly on early archaeological evidence of possible bit-wear on horse teeth and other indirect signs. More recent genetic studies analysing DNA from horse remains across a wide geographic area, however, have complicated this picture considerably, suggesting that the specific genetic lineage of nearly all modern domestic horses actually traces back to a different, more geographically limited region, and that this lineage spread extremely rapidly across Eurasia within just a few centuries, largely displacing other, earlier-domesticated or wild horse populations in the process. This rapid spread has led some researchers to argue that domesticated horses were valued not merely as a source of meat, which earlier and more limited domestication attempts elsewhere may have primarily been for, but specifically for traits suited to riding and transport, such as a calmer temperament and a stronger back, which would have made them dramatically more useful and thus worth the effort of breeding and trading extensively. The sheer speed of their spread, faster than would be expected from simple population growth alone, is often cited as indirect evidence that people were actively and deliberately trading, breeding and transporting horses across long distances almost as soon as suitable animals became available. Much about this process remains actively debated, including precisely how riding technology itself developed and spread, and archaeologists continue to reassess older evidence in light of new genetic findings, meaning that the accepted account of horse domestication has changed substantially even within the past decade and may well continue to do so.

TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
