The Challenge of Storing Renewable Energy

As wind and solar power have grown from a marginal share of global electricity generation to a substantial and rapidly expanding one, an old problem in the energy industry has taken on new urgency: unlike conventional power stations, which can generally increase or decrease output on demand, wind and solar generation depends on weather and the time of day, producing electricity in patterns that do not always match when people actually need it. Grid-scale batteries, most commonly using lithium-ion technology similar to that found in electric vehicles and consumer electronics, have become an increasingly common tool for addressing short-term mismatches, storing surplus electricity generated during sunny or windy periods and releasing it within minutes when demand rises or generation drops. Falling battery costs over the past decade have made this approach increasingly economical for periods ranging from a few minutes up to several hours. For longer gaps, such as multiple consecutive cloudy or windless days, or seasonal variation between summer and winter generation, battery storage alone generally becomes prohibitively expensive at current technology and cost levels, prompting significant research and investment interest in alternative approaches. These include pumped-storage hydropower, which uses surplus electricity to pump water uphill for later release through turbines, as well as various forms of green hydrogen production, in which surplus renewable electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, with the hydrogen then stored and later converted back into electricity or used directly as a fuel. Which combination of these technologies will ultimately prove most cost-effective for addressing longer-duration storage needs, and how quickly costs for each will fall as the industry scales up, remains a subject of considerable debate among energy analysts, with different studies reaching notably different conclusions depending on their assumptions about future technology costs and regional grid conditions.

TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN

Most energy analysts have reached a consensus on which long-duration storage technology will become dominant in the future.
