Soil Erosion and the Search for Sustainable Farming

Healthy topsoil, the nutrient-rich upper layer of earth in which most crops grow, can take centuries or even millennia to form naturally through the gradual weathering of rock and accumulation of organic matter. Under certain farming practices, however, that same topsoil can be lost at a dramatically faster rate than nature can replace it, a problem that has drawn increasing attention as concerns about long-term global food security have grown.
Conventional tillage, the practice of turning over soil with a plough before planting, has long been used to control weeds and prepare fields for seeding, but it also breaks up the soil's natural structure and leaves bare earth exposed to wind and rain, both of which can carry topsoil away far more readily than soil that remains covered and undisturbed. Repeated over many growing seasons, this erosion gradually reduces soil fertility, meaning farmers must rely increasingly on synthetic fertilisers to maintain crop yields on land that has lost much of its natural nutrient content.
In response, a growing number of farmers, particularly in regions where erosion has become a pressing concern, have adopted alternative approaches broadly known as conservation agriculture. These include minimal or no-till planting, in which seeds are placed directly into undisturbed soil through narrow slots rather than turning over the entire field, and the use of cover crops planted between main growing seasons specifically to keep soil covered and its structure held together by living roots when it would otherwise lie bare.
Whether such practices can be adopted widely enough, and quickly enough, to meaningfully offset erosion at a global scale remains an open question that agricultural researchers continue to study through long-term field trials across a range of climates and soil types, with results so far varying considerably depending on local conditions, crop type and how consistently the practices are maintained over successive years.
TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
Long-term field trials have already proven that conservation agriculture can fully reverse soil erosion in every climate.
